Equal treatment at work

It’s against the law for employers to discriminate in the workplace and throughout the recruitment process on the grounds of:

  • gender
  • sexual orientation
  • disability
  • race
  • religion or belief
  • age

Employers also have a duty to prevent bullying and harassing behaviour in the workplace.

Who can help?

  • The Citizens Advice Bureau can help with your rights in many aspects of your daily life – including work, housing, money and consumer rights. Visit their website at www.citizensadvice.org.uk.
  • The Disability Rights Commission website tells you exactly what your rights are in work or training. Find out more at www.drc-gb.org.
  • The Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS) offers free, confidential and impartial advice on employment rights issues. Visit their website at www.acas.org.uk or call the ACAS help line on 08457 474 747 from 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday.
  • Your Connexions Personal Adviser at your local Connexions Centre is there to help if you have any queries with how you’re being treated at work.

Remember: If you think you’re not being treated correctly at work, it’s best to seek advice. Keeping quiet won't solve the problem.
