In Year 9 your son or daughter will be asked to choose the subjects and types of qualifications that they will study in Years 10 and 11. What they choose to learn in Years 10 and 11 may affect the courses of study that will be available to them after this so it is important that they think carefully about how these decisions will affect them.
Your son or daughter may plan to enter further education or training after Year 11 and they may intend to go into higher education after the age of 18. Whatever their future ambitions they should think about what qualifications they may be expected to have.
Each school offers slightly different options, but all will give you the chance to get involved in these important decisions. Schools may hold information events or provide other opportunities for you to speak to teachers. In addition, some schools may provide information booklets with all the information you need.
Connexions Personal Advisers are also available in school to help with Year 9 options.
There is a wide range of subject options available, although certain subjects remain compulsory.
Your son/daughters’ school may also offer different types of qualification. Some options may include the opportunity to study off-site at a college or with a training provider and work towards valuable vocational and work-related qualifications.
