Freshers' week

Freshers’ week is the ideal time for your son or daughter to move into their accommodation (if they’re not studying locally), find their way around campus, join clubs and societies, make friends,  register and collect their student loan – all prior to starting their studies.

The week is usually based around a series of social events and your son or daughter  should be sent a programme of events in advance, listing activities and entertainment organised by the university / college and the Students' Union. But Freshers Week isn’t  one long party..! There are also some not-so-much-fun bits - where there may be lots of forms and documents for your son or daughter to fill in to ensure that their student days start smoothly!

The essential things to do during Freshers Week

It’s a good idea for your son or daughter to have several passport-sized photos to hand to ensure that any time spent queuing isn’t in vain! They should make sure that they:

  • Register with their institution
  • Register with their Hall of Residence (if they’re living away from home)
  • Pay any fees that are due
  • Attend faculty induction and sign up for study options
  • Register with the student library and attend a library tour
  • Attend induction presentations where useful information is provided on finance, personal safety, student support and counselling services.
  • Register with the university medical centre or local GP
  • Look out for second hand book sales where they may be able to pick up useful study material at a reduced price.
  • Register with a few clubs and societies at the Freshers’ Fair
  • Eat healthily and try to fit in some sleep! (Term will soon start with earnest.)

Most students have a great time during Freshers’week, but it’s natural that some may end up feeling a little homesick too  Every university has Student Counsellors to help and advise students who may be feeling down or overwhelmed.
